Cotton Mather (1663-1728) is famous as the clergyman involved with the witch trials in Massachusetts (although the guide to these papers only refers to one witch trial as a separate entity). He was also a notable intellectual, author, and scholar. His father, Increase Mather (1639-1723), was also a famous clergyman who served as the president of Harvard College between 1685 and 1701.
