This book gives the ancestry and descendants of Jacob Holtzclaw and his wife Anna Margreth Otterbach. It also gives a brief history of the colony at Germanna in Orange County and the later settlement at Germantown in Fauquier County, Virginia. The towns no longer exists.

The first Germanna Colony was established in 1714 with 12 families that Governor Spotswood brought from Germany. The site of the town Germanna was in present day Orange County, Virginia. These families left Germanna in 1720 and established a settlement called Germantown in present day Fauquier County, Virginia.
