Description
Periodical for the interchange of genealogical data and history of the Foote (and variant spellings) families who came mainly from England and Ireland. Some allied families came from Czechoslovakia and France. Some focus is on (but not limited to) ancestors and descendants of Nathaniel Foote (1592-1644) and his wife, Elizabeth Deming or Deeming of Colchester, Essex County, England. Nathaniel and Elizabeth moved to London, and later immigrated to Watertown, Massachusetts in 1633. In 1634 or 1635, Nathaniel and nine other adventurers left Watertown and founded Wethersfield, Hartford County, Connecticut. Other key family lines include: Nathaniel's brother, Joshua Foote (b. 1591) and sister, Mary Foote Hewes (b. 1585), who also came to America; Pasco Foote who settled in Salem, Massachusetts; and two brothers, William and Richard Foote who came from Cornwall, England to settle in Stafford, King George County, Virginia. In the 1600s, these and other Foote families lived in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Virginia. In the 1700s, some settled in Nova Scotia and Quebec (Canada), and in New Hampshire, New York, and Vermont. During the 1800s, some moved to Newfoundland (Canada), New Zealand, and to Alabama, California, Colorado, the Dakota Territory, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Utah, and Wisconsin. Later descendants also lived in British Columbia, Manitoba, and Ontario (Canada), Finland, Japan, Saudi Arabia, and in Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, Wyoming, and elsewhere. Some descendants married persons with Cree or Cherokee Indian bloodlines.
Issuing Body
The Foote Family of America was first established in June 1907, at Wethersfield, Connecticut. In 1908, they erected the Nathaniel Foote Memorial Monument on the Village Green of Old Wethersfield, the site of Nathaniel's homestead. The organization became inactive around 1930-1934, but was revived in October 1984, on the 350th anniversary of Nathaniel Foote's settling Wethersfield. They were then known as the Foote Family Association of America. Reunions are held every other year. This is not the same organization as the Foote Family Association of North America, although each association's newsletter includes information about the other organization. To view select articles and other information, see their Web site.
