Notes

Current Publication Frequency
Quarterly
Current Publication Frequency
Quarterly, issued as two magazines and two newsletters per year. Some irregularities.
Dates of publication and/or sequential designation
Vol. 1 1st qtr. (Mar 1965) -
General Note
Thomas Tolman Family Organization intends to publish two magazines and two newsletters each year on a specific schedule, i.e. magazines in June and December, and newsletters in March and September. Circumstances beyond their control occasionally require them to combine issues and/or change publication dates. It's hard, at times, to distinguish between the two publications because of similar formats, contents, title variations, and some undated or untitled issues. This library has combined all magazines and newsletters into one record and arranged them chronologically, allowing the reader to distinguish between the two publications.
General Note
Editors: Robert S. Tolman, Wilford H. Tolman, Don B. Tolman, E. Dennis Tolman, Tom Tolman, et al.
General Note
Some titles varied, some titles were combined, some issues lacked a title, and when we filmed early issues, some newsletters and magazines were filmed together. Titles on the microfiche say, "Thomas Tolman Family Organization newsletter," but they contain both newsletters and magazines.
General Note
Only three issues published in 1968. Two issues published in 1970 and two in 1971. Publication was suspended in 1973.
General Note
Published in Kearns, Utah, and Bountiful, Utah.
General Note
Some issues and pages are missing, and some were filmed out of order.
General Note
Not yet available in PERiodical Source Index (PERSI) at this time. (3 Feb. 2006).
Numbering Peculiarities
Magazines were designated with volume number, quarter numbers (qtr.), and years from 1965 to 1994, after which magazines were designated by month and year, only. Some are double issues. Newsletters were generally designated by month and year. Volume 34 was used on both June and December 1992 issues. Some reprinted pages show their original volume numbers and dates.
Description
Periodical for the interchange of genealogical data and history of the Tolman (and variant spellings) families descending from Thomas Tolman II (b. 1608), the son of Thomas Tolman of Salcombe, England. Thomas II left Dorchester, England to settle in Massachusetts in 1630. His posterity includes: Thomas III (b. 1633), Samuel (b. 1676), William (b. 1719), Reuben (b. 1757), and Nathan (b. 1788). Nathan married Sarah Hewett, and had Cyrus (b. 1820), Judson (b. 1826) and Benjamin Hewett Tolman (b. 1829), who joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1845. In 1849, they migrated with the Latter-day Saint pioneers to Utah, settling Brigham City, Knowllen, Richfield, Tooele, and other parts of the Salt Lake Valley. In the 1600-1800s, Tolman families lived in Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Utah, Vermont, and Wyoming. Later descendants also lived in Alberta (Canada), Belgium, Seoul Korea, and in Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Louisiana, Michigan, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Washington, and elsewhere.
Additional Physical Form
Also available on microfilm and microfiche.
Former Title Complexity
Title variations: Tolman family magazine and newsletter; Tolman family magazine; Tolman family newsletter; Thomas Tolman Family Organization newsletter; Thomas Tolman family newsletter; Newsletter (Thomas Tolman Family Genealogy Center); Tolman family newsletter. Some issues had misprinted titles or no title.
Issuing Body
The Thomas Tolman Family Organization was established in 1965 and incorporated in 1972. Headquarters are the Thomas Tolman Genealogical Center in Bountiful, Utah. Membership is open to all descendants of Thomas Tolman II. Several related-organizations exist, named for descendants such as the William Alvin Tolman Family Organization. The Organization publishes quarterly (two semiannual periodicals each year) containing genealogical information and current news. The magazine focuses on genealogical data and biographical sketches, and the newsletter focuses on current events, organization business, and reunion, but both periodicals can carry both kinds of information.
Binding Information
,DO NOT BIND. MAKE THEM FILM-ONLY every 2-3 years. Keep loose issues in folders on the shelves for 2-3 years, then make them film-only. Binding these together with all the numbering errors, inconsistencies, and title changes, will only cause chaos in
