Lawrence Winkler was born in Prussia in 1771. He immigrated to New Jersey about 1795. He married Fannie Payne about the same time and together they moved to North Carolina. Because of his feelings about slavery he took his family to Ohio, by way of Virginia, where he remained until his death. His descendants through his son John are included in this book.
