Description
Colonel John Dement was born in Gallatin, Tennessee, son of David Dement and Dorcus Willis. He lived in Tennessee and Illinois and married Mary Louise Dodge. He served as Illinois state Treasurer. Descendants lived in Illinois, California and elsewhere. Ancestry is traced to Charles Dement, born in North Carolina (?) ca. 1740.

Charles Dement (ca.1740-1820) was probably the son of John Dement of Bertie Co., North Carolina. He married Selah Thomas. They were the parents of nine children. Family members were settled in several locations, including Sumner and Rutherford Counties, Tennessee and Madison and Lauderdale Counties, Alabama. Charles and Selah were buried in Madison County, Alabama. Several generations of descendants are given for nine different Dement family groups....

George Gordon (b. ca 1700) and his two brothers, Adam and Alexander, emigrated about 1730 from near Kenmore Castle, Scotland, to northern Virginia. They then settled in Carlisle, Cumberland Co., Pennsylvania, and later moved to Shady Grove, Franklin Co., Pennsylvania. Descendants lived in Pennsylvania, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Maryland and elsewhere.

Peter Dillon was born in about 1754, probably in Ireland. He was living in Somerset County, New Jersey by 1775. He fought in the American Revolution. He married Mary Vactor or Veghte in 1779. They had eleven known children. They moved to Pennsylvania and then to Ohio. Peter died in 1823 in Coshocton County, Ohio Descendants and relatives lived mainly in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Missouri, Iowa and Kansas.

Edwards Brown, son of Christopher Columbus Brown (1834-1904) and Elizabeth Jane Stuart, was born in 1863 in Springfiled, Illinois. He married Gertrude Dement, daughter of Henry Dodge Dement and Mary Field Williams, in 1886. They had nine children. He died in 1923 in Winner, South Dakota.
