The Smithson family originated in northern England. John Smithson was born in the 1790s and was a relative of the powerful noble family of Percy. His son, Frederick Smithson, came to America and settled in Illinois. His son was Edmond Shirtcliffe Smithson (1864-1956) who was born in Minnesota. Edmond married Ella Nora Geer (1869-1944) in 1886. George Geer's children were born in Connecticut in the mid-later 17th century. Thomas Geer had a daughter, Mary Geer, and a son Shubael Geer born in 1675 in Wenham, Massachusetts. Descendants are scattered throughout the U.S. and Québec.

Description
Stephen Arnold immigrated, with his parents, from England to New Jersey and eventually settled in Boston, Massachusetts, where he married Rhoda (Ruby) Rice. Their son, Randall Arnold, was born in 1770 while Ruby was accompanying her husband was the captain of a voyage to the West Indies. After he retired from the sea, they settled in her home town of Rutland, Vermont. Descendants and relatives lived in New England, Ohio, Illinois and elsewhere.
