Description
The Thornburg massacre occurred in 1879. The site of the memorial is about 18 miles northeast of Meeker, Colorado. It lists soldiers and civilians killed and wounded in the massacre. The soldiers were from Companies F and D, 5th Cavalry; Company E, 3rd Cavalry; and Company D, 9th Cavalry.

Joseph Thornburg (ca. 1730-1800), a Quaker, was born in Pennsylvania, probably a son of Edward Throburg. He married Ann Armfield ca. 1754. They had eight children, 1754-1773, born in North Carolina. He died in North Carolina and was buried at New Garden, Guilford County. Descendants listed lived in North Carolina, Indiana, and elsewhere.

Thomas Thornbury immigrated to Virginia from England in 1616. Alice Lane arrived in 1620. They were married in 1625. Thomas Shepherd, who settled the village of Shepherdstown, West Virginia, was probably born in Maryland, the grandson of Thomas Shepherd, who had lived in Prince George County, Maryland, prior to 1698.
