The Thornburg massacre occurred in 1879. The site of the memorial is about 18 miles northeast of Meeker, Colorado. It lists soldiers and civilians killed and wounded in the massacre. The soldiers were from Companies F and D, 5th Cavalry; Company E, 3rd Cavalry; and Company D, 9th Cavalry.

Joseph Thornburg (ca. 1730-1800), a Quaker, was born in Pennsylvania, probably a son of Edward Throburg. He married Ann Armfield ca. 1754. They had eight children, 1754-1773, born in North Carolina. He died in North Carolina and was buried at New Garden, Guilford County. Descendants listed lived in North Carolina, Indiana, and elsewhere. Includes the Heiss and other related families.

McKay McCarty (1797-1859) married Nancy Lanham in 1819 in Switzerland County, Indiana. He moved to Shelby County, Indiana in 1820 where he later died in Addison Township. Descendants lived in Indiana, Montana, California, and elsewhere.
