He married Fawn Mahala Sylvester 16 April 1919 in Sanpete County, Utah. Her parents were James William Sylvester (1864-1935) and Mahala Charlotte Bell (1866-1948). Valentine Kirkpatrick, born ca. 1760, came into Mecklenburg County, North Carolina from Pennsylvania by April 22, 1779. He married Martha McMurray, daughter of Robert and Eleanor McMurray, ca. 1781 supposedly in Mecklenburg County. The couple had ten children. Valentine died on September 11, 1830 and Martha died on September 17, 1842.
